BEFORE

1. Define Success:

2. Plan ahead:

Before you go in, define what a successful event is for you. What sessions & what speakers you need to attend so you can learn their strategies. Often deals are not made during the events but after. So do not go in with a mindset of making deals right then and there.

Before the conference, take some time to review and preload your calendar. Plan sessions and events you want to attend. If you know someone who is going as well, make sure you schedule time for them. This will help you make the most of your time and ensure you don't miss anything important.

3. Prepare to show

Equip yourself for long lines. Make sure you can show your idea to people standing before or behind you, when you are waiting and have nothing else to do. Bring noise canceling headphones, to make sure you can keep the attention of your players. Bring your own business cards and/or something to remember you or your game as a gift, stickers are a fun and inexpensive gift. Bring a piece of paper and pen to collect emails for either newsletter or playtests. Bring your best attitude and have fun! 😊

DURING

4. Pick ONE Person:

Pick one person during the event that you want to have a deeper connection with after the event. Don't try to create something meaningful with everyone, otherwise you will end up with no-one.

5. Networking

Meet other professionals in your field. Take advantage of networking events and try to connect with as many people as possible. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself and start a conversation. Make sure you are able to say what you do and who you are in a quick few sentences.

6. Take Notes

Either notebook or quickly jot important information into your phone. Anything that helps you capture information fast, while learning. Conferences are big learning opportunities. (e.g. take pictures with phone without flash of presentation slides)

7. Stay hydrated and well-fed

Conferences can be long and tiring, be sure to drink plenty of water and eat healthy food throughout the day. You will only be at your top-performance if you take care of yourself during these days. Even if it is enticing try to stay away from consuming large amounts of alcohol, if you meet people the next day.

8. Dress appropriately

Check the conference dress code before you go and dress accordingly to who you want to network with. You want to feel comfortable but also professional. Make time for hygiene, shower before you go and make sure you smell nice throughout the conference.

9. Take Breaks & be open-minded

Don't try to attend every session and event. Take breaks and give yourself time to relax and recharge. Keep an open mind and be willing to learn from others. You never know what new ideas or perspectives you might encounter at a conference.
